Illegal block in the back

Heard on TV: I was watching football on Saturday, and the announcer said someone was called for an illegal block in the back.

I'm just wondering: Is there a LEGAL block in the back?

Update: Because of this post, I hear that you CAN block in the back legally in certain situations. I didn't know that, obviously. Live and learn.

Found online: A headline says Homicide victims rarely talk to police.

How could they? They're dead.

Whomever's next

Found online: So the Browns needed a sort of player-coach to play and mentor Johnny Manziel — or whomever the next quarterback will be.

Sigh. Whom and whomever are overused. Here, whoever would work fine. "Whoever the next quarterback will be is a phrase" — actually a nominal — and you don't use whomever. (I learned that in college; thanks, Charles Millsaps.)

Unfortunately, writers and speakers have fallen in love with whom and whomever. And I really like this writer.
