Found in a book: He had left all that behind him or had he?

This was the third sentence of the last paragraph in a chapter of a novel.

I'd leave part of that sentence in that paragraph, then finish the chapter with a one-sentence paragraph.

He had left all that behind him.

Or had he?

It's much more effective.
