Too much rushing

Needs editing: And the defense was manhandled by Notre Dame’s running game, which piled up 212 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns in a victory that was never in doubt.

 The writer talks about Notre Dame's running game, then piles on with rushing yards and rushing touchdowns. This can be re-written this way:

 And the defense was manhandled by Notre Dame’s running game, which piled up 212 yards and three touchdowns in a victory that was never in doubt.

Fine line...

Nice line: Found in a Washington Post column -- Devin Thomas was as elusive as a misplaced television remote. Actually, it was true. On one impressive play, Thomas made several players miss, and it was one of the key plays in a win.

 Am I a Washington Redskins fan? No. My team won 25-23 with a last-second field goal. I'm a fan of good writers.

 Oops! Here's the Atlanta-Journal Constitution headline -- Mean Joe Green finally gets Coke ad award, and here's the first paragraph of the story -- PITTSBURGH — Mean Joe Greene already had his four Super Bowl rings. Now, 30 years later, he also has his CLIO for one of TV's most famous commercials.

 Greene is correct; the headline writer goofed. I've done it, too, but not with Mean Joe Greene.

 Smiths' field: I was just reading the Washington Post story on the trick play run by the Washington Redskins on Sunday. The story had three Smiths -- Washington punter/passer Hunter Smith, special-teams coach Danny Smith, and Denver cornerback Alphonso Smith. The writer used full names when the first two Smiths were quoted. It was a little confusing, but it was readable.

 Shaun Suisham, the kicker, was a lot easier.
