Its vs. their

Let's look at a sentence found online:

The Marlins should be signaling to its fan base that the building blocks are being put into place for a sustained run of excellence — that management knows what it is doing here.

I'm not sure "its fan base" goes with the Marlins. I'd think they "their" would  work better here.
