Word game

I'M OFTEN (OR USUALLY) wrong when my wife and I disagree over words, so I was a little apprehensive today when we talked about the singular of criteria (yes, criteria is plural).

She thought the singular of criteria ended in an "m," while I was sure it was criterion. So I looked it up and found several responses, including these two:

By the way, I learned through Wikipedia, that a criterium, or crit, is a bike race held on a short course (usually less than 5 km), often run on closed-off city center streets.

It's amazing what you can learn on the Internet.

Word lists

I love word lists, and I found several at Merriam-Webster's web site.

There's the one about the top 10 commonly confused words; and, yes, most of them have been explained here.

There's the list of the top 10 words of the '70s, and, yes, punk is No. 1.

There's the list of words for things you didn't know have names.

And there's a list of their 10 favorite definitions; they have a photo of an Elvis impersonator on No. 1.

If you want to see more lists, go here.
