Predominantly I mainly see

FOUND ONLINE: Predominantly I mainly see Indians, Asians and Europeans living here. Including these there are also high numbers of Chinese, Korean, Tibetan, French, Swiss, German and British. North American’s are around in many capacities but not overwhelmingly.

This is obviously a travel story written by someone who is fairly new to English. You don't need some of the words, and you don't need to put an apostrophe in Americans. Let's try again:

Among those living here, I see lots of Indians, Asians and Europeans, plus high numbers of Chinese, Korean, Tibetan, French, Swiss, German and British. A few North Americans are scattered here and there

Crystal nodded

FOUND IN A NOVEL: "You have to write down every cent you spend," Crystal nodded.

This is from one of my favorite novelists, but I disagree here. Crystal didn't nod it; she said it.

"You have to write down every cent you spend," Crystal said, nodding.

Or: Crystal nodded. "You have to write down every cent you spend," she said.

11 or 12 PM

FOUND ONLINE: I go to bed around 11 or 12 PM.

I found this on a travel website, and, at first, I was going to leave it alone. Then I realized I needed to speak up.

The writer (master's degree in communications) was speaking of a time around midnight, and he should have said 11 p.m. or 12 a.m. If you mention 12 p.m., you're talking about noon, not midnight.

On the other hand, he could be right and I'm confused (which happens). Maybe he DOES go to bed at 11 a.m. or 12 p.m.

What do YOU think?
