Lost for more than 300 years

FOUND ONLINE: Lost for more than 300 years, Libert learned about the Griffin in a junior-high school class.

The Weather Channel story was a video with voiceover, and Steve Libert was a wreck hunter being interviewed about a shipwreck that he says is the lost French ship, the Griffin.

If you go by the above sentence, it sounds like Libert had been lost for more than 300 years. Let's do a rewrite:

The Griffin has been lost for more than 300 years, and Libert learned about it in a junior-high school class.
