Lead the National League

FOUND ONLINE: He was great in the leadoff spot mainly due to his speed, evidenced by the fact he lead the National League in stolen bases in six consecutive seasons.

 This is the wrong kind of lead (this would be like lead paint). And the sentence is wordy.
He was great in the leadoff spot because of his speed, as he led the National League in stolen bases in six consecutive seasons.

 It's fairly obvious that the writer was changing a New York Yankee team to New York Yankees teams (because of the three-peat). So you don't need a.
