Complementary appetizers

FOUND IN A NOVEL: He gave Qwilleran and Polly a table in a window overlooking the lake and served them complementary appetizers: french-fried oysters.

This was written by one of my favorite novelists, but I can't help but believe that she should have used complimentary, not complementary. After all, the oysters would be compliments of the house.

Getting compliments

HEADLINE FOUND ONLINE: Miami Dolphins Looking For Complimentary Back To Jay Ajayi

I've joked about this before. "You're not only a powerful man, but you dress well, too."

The headline writer was looking for "Complementary," not "Complimentary."

ALSO FOUND ONLINE: He bullies his opponents with power, and would compliment the speed rushing ability of Cameron Wake very well.

I actually found this on March 29, but it fit here. Yes, it should have been "complement." And I might hyphenate speed-rushing.
