WHETHER THAT STORM

FOUND ONLINE: How can a company whether that kind of storm?

How can a company weather that kind of storm?

ALSO ONLINE: Defensive back Vontae Davis #23 of the Indianapolis Colts brakes up a pass intended for wide receiver Devon Wylie #19 of the Kansas City Chiefs during the first half on December 23, 2012 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.

I found this while looking for info on Devon Wylie's death. The cutline writer meant breaks, not brakes. (Captions are called cutlines in the newspaper biz.)

They put every bit of information in that one sentence, usually not a good idea.

Man (right) walks with his wife

CAPTION FOUND ONLINE: Tom Burns (right) and wife Robin

I know all about the longstanding tradition of pointing out who is who in photos. Still, I'm going to nitpick here.

It's pretty obvious that Tom Burns is on our right and wife Robin is on the left. The web site's style is to beat the reader over the head with that info, but it's not necessary.

I was working at a newspaper years ago and ran a photo of a famous racehorse being walked by a groom. According to the newspaper's style, I had to say "Horse (right) is being walked by Somebody." Which is silly.
