Accelerated steadily

FROM A NOVEL: The sky cycles accelerated steadily and silently.

 That bothered me the first time I read Ringworld, and it bothered me when I read it again. This sounds like the skycycles are moving at a steady rate, which means they're NOT accelerating.

 Acceleration involves an increase in speed. With steady acceleration, they'd soon be racing out of control.

 I wish I could have edited that.
