FOUND ONLINE: Back in the day, a low-fat, high-carb diet used to be recommended for diabetics.

The writer used "Back in the day" and "used" in the same sentence, and they have the same purpose (going back to the past). Let's do a rewrite.

Back in the day, doctors recommended a low-fat, high-carb diet for diabetics.

Or: Years ago, doctors recommended a low-fat, high-carb diet for diabetics.

Or: Doctors once recommended a low-fat, high-carb diet for diabetics.
