I've written about this before. The novelist could have let the protagonists saunter, slink, slide, matriculate or just walk.
They could have stumbled or strolled. They could have turned around and moonwalked. They could have ambled, crawled, trudged, plodded, hiked, tramped, tromped, stomped, trekked, marched, strode, sashayed or glided. They might have even promenaded.
But, no, they made their way.
Gag.
This became an issue for me when I found eight made-their-ways on the first page of a chapter in a novel. Then I found 40 more in the rest of the chapter.
Don't have your characters make their way somewhere; find something better. Or 20 something betters.
