FOUND IN A NOVEL: As a newsman, Qwilleran was an expert at interviewing difficult subjects, but he was defeated by Aunt Fanny.

FROM THE SAME NOVEL: The desk in Aunt Fanny's sitting room was a graceful French escritoire devoted to correspondence...
An ESCRITOIRE is a writing table or desk; specifically : secretary.
FROM ANOTHER NOVEL: ... left-handed whelk.
A WHELK is a sea snail. I don't know how he could tell it was left-handed; they don't have hands.
