I WAS JUST watching an old British TV show, and one of the characters was complaining about the spelling of a word in a student's paper. The writer had spelled it plow rather than plough.
"That's not the way you spell plough," that character complained.
The other character said "that's the way they spell it in the (United) States." "He's probably downloaded the whole thing from an American website," she added.
I guess the student didn't want to plough through the subject matter.
