Who's tailgate is it?

FOUND ON THE SPORTS WIRE: "It disappoints me that I have to move away from a lot where I've been for about 20 years, but I saw it coming a long time ago," said Johnson, who's tailgate has attracted international recognition as he's been featured in newspapers, on The Food Network and even profiled in a German magazine.

Most of that is fine, but it should be whose, not who's.

HYPHENATION ROCK: I always have a hard time figuring out where the hyphens go for Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski. Still, I know they go before the "s." Why mention it? For a wire story, the computer just hyphenated his name before the "w," so I put a hyphen ahead of the "s."

No suspension

Found online: Suspended senior guard Reggie Redding had 15 points and nine rebounds in his first game of the season and No. 8 Villanova took the lead early and cruised to a 96-58 victory over Fordham on Saturday.

The problem is "Suspended senior guard..." Redding wasn't a suspended guard on Saturday. This should have said "Senior guard Reggie Redding, coming off a suspension,..." or "Senior guard Reggie Redding returned from a suspension..."

In fact, the first one is the way I fixed it Saturday while working on the local sports copy desk. It's part of the men's top-25 basketball roundup, and I'm also doing the women's roundup.

Our deadline is 11:30 tonight, up from midnight, because of snow and ice in the area. There's an NFL game at 8:30 -- Cowboys and Saints -- but it won't get in; maybe the score.

I was writing a headline on the Duke-Gonzaga men's basketball game, and Bulldogs (Gonzaga's nickname) wouldn't fit in a one-column head. So I had to use Gonzaga's unofficial nickname: Zags.

We had a stretch while we waited for games. Then they started coming, and there was less talking in the news room. We had to use a few filler stories, including a nice one on a high-school defensive end who is overcoming a rough background.

We've finished reading proofs. We're done, so now we head out into the snow.

Comment: The above suspended guard received a quick tongue-in-cheek comment.

Actually, at first glance, I thought he was 'suspended' from the ceiling or somewhere and had to reread. GRIN
