Primitive deeps

FOUND IN A NOVEL: I shall never forget, in that moment, how instantly conscious I became of my manhood.  The primitive deeps of my nature stirred.

This is from one of my favorite novels, The Sea Wolf, by Jack London. I wonder if London meant primitive depths rather than deeps.

He sauntered slowly forward

FOUND IN A NOVEL: He sauntered slowly forward to the break of the poop...

This is the first part of a sentence from one of my favorite books, The Sea Wolf, by Jack London. I just wondered ... could he saunter forward quickly?

I'm not sure that "slowly" is necessary here. "Saunter" makes me think of "slowly." What do YOU think?
