Dying or dyeing

Found online: Hansen the human made a mockery of Hansen the horse prior to his last race, the Blue Grass Stakes, by dying dyeing the nearly-white animal's tail blue.

Dying involves not breathing; dyeing involves changing color by use of chemicals.

So the horse's owner wasn't dying the horse's tail; he was dyeing it.
