Tucked in a hillside

Found in a novel: Tucked in a hillside in Portugee Gulch, I was impressed by the size of the place.

It sounds like the book's narrator was tucked in the hillside. Let's try again:

I was impressed by the size of the place, which was tucked in a hillside in Portugee Gulch.

I added "which was" and lengthened the sentence, but it makes more sense this way.
