FOUND ON TV: I was just watching the pilot for a TV show from the 1970s, and the subtitles said that MELANCHOLIC MUSIC was playing.
That sounds like a sick baby (with colic) listening to My Melancholy Baby, a popular song published in 1912 (I looked it up).
It turns out that melancholic is a real word. It means feeling or expressing pensive sadness. That fits the mood of that show.
