Famous writer needs an editor

I was reading a few pages in a novel by a famous author — he's an impressive writer, too — but something bothered me.

I can't remember exactly what he said, but it was something like "He gave she and I a ride in his car." You wouldn't say "He gave she a fast lecture" or "He gave I a new book." You'd say that "He gave me a book."

I would have relieved the problem by saying "He gave us a ride in his car." It's shorter and says the same thing.

That famous writer needed a good editor.
