FOUND IN A NOVEL: "You have to write down every cent you spend," Crystal nodded.

This is from one of my favorite novelists, but I disagree here. Crystal didn't nod it; she said it.

"You have to write down every cent you spend," Crystal said, nodding.


Or: Crystal nodded. "You have to write down every cent you spend," she said.
