Chase hard after

I'm sorry, but this construction bothers me:

"I got behind, 2-0, got the ball up and he hit it out,” said Lee, a free agent the Yankees will chase hard after. “I was trying to throw strikes on the first and second pitches.”

I don't like dangling after at the end of the sentence.

"I got behind, 2-0, got the ball up and he hit it out,” said Lee, a free agent whom the Yankees will pursue. “I was trying to throw strikes on the first and second pitches.”

What do you think?
