Haggis, anyone?

Fans of poetry in general and Robert Burns in particular might want to check out today's N.Y. Times short editorial on Burns' birthday and celebrations. I have Scottish ancestry, but I suspect my wife and I will pass up haggis this evening and have fish and chips instead.

On the sideline

This sentence seems innocuous enough, but it requires a fine edit.

With his toes on the sideline, Hester caught the ball but his 11-yard return didn't hurt the Packers one bit.

Devin Hester's toes were not on the sideline; they were near the sideline. If they'd been ON the sideline, he'd have been whistled out of bounds.
