Working with writers

I've noticed that some of my best writing comes when I write back to a writer. I don't want to break the writer's spirit with tons of edits, but I want him/her to see ways to improve the manuscript.

Sometimes I make hard edits that tighten and improve the wording, or I'll re-format dialogue. Or I'll question a fact. The writer might think I'm criticizing his/her writing; no, I just want the writer to think in another way. I want to help the writer and the reader.

My editing style is pretty gentle. Sometimes you can't tell I've even been there ... unless you look at the Track Changes.
