Fuzzy head

I just found the headline "Watford Verbals to UVa." I understand it; it means someone named Watford (it's David) has made a verbal commitment to the University of Virginia.

The problem is that I don't like using verbals as a verb. It sounds too much like gerbils, and I can see a bunch of little, fuzzy words racing inside a wheel. It also sounds like coach-speak.
