They come in pairs

I'VE BEEN WORKING TONIGHT on the local sports copy desk, and I've noticed several stories saying that someone hit a pair of doubles or had a pair of hits. You might write that someone had a pair of two-run singles (rather than saying two two-run singles), but usually two hits will do.

Unless you're the next Hemingway or Faulkner, simple is better. Hemingway advocated it, and even writers of that caliber need a good editor.
