Off the mark

I UNDERSTAND WHAT THE writer is trying to say here:

All you can ask for is a defense full of athletes that blitzes a lot and flies to the ball.

He's talking about a defense that blitzes a lot, but he has athletes followed by the verb blitzes. They don't match up.

He'd be better off saying this:

All you can ask for is an athletic defense that blitzes a lot and flies to the ball.
