It looks like the 49ers released the Raiders in 2014. It was Aldon Smith.

After the 49ers released Smith in 2014, the Raiders took a flier and stayed the course for three seasons, watching Smith suit up for nine total contests.

I have to admit that "watching Smith suit up for nine total contests" bothers me. It makes this a run-on sentence. We could change it to this:

After the 49ers released Smith in 2014, the Raiders took a flier and watched Smith suit up for nine total contests over three seasons.
