Media is or media are

This headline makes me wonder:

How Social Media Is Muddying the Waters for Jobseekers

The problem is that the word media is already plural, so social media are muddying the waters for job seekers. Yes, I also think job seekers is two words.

How Social Media Are Muddying the Waters for Job Seekers

What do you think?

  1. I agree with the "are"...but I would have written:
"How Social Media Muddies the Waters for Job Seekers." Saves a few letters and avoids the singular/plural issue entirely.
(Miss you, Tom, from your old list serv and sometimes miss those heated discussions when I'm not the one under attack from the guy in Nine Mile Falls for writing for anthologies.)

  2. Terri, if you agree with the "are" perhaps you should have thought about "How Social Media Muddy the Waters for Job Seekers." :)

  3. Terri, I have to agree with Rob here. Muddy rather than muddies...
