I FELT BAD today when I learned that the McClatchy newspaper chain has dissolved the copy desk at the Raleigh (NC) News & Observer. McClatchy will consolidate its copy desks at the Charlotte Observer.
I have no connection to the N&O, other than the facts that I was a former newspaperman and I was part of something similar (and I live in the same state). Media General dissolved the copy desk at the Winston-Salem Journal in December of 2010, ending my wife's full-time job and my part-time freelance work. MG now handles Winston-Salem's copy editing at its Richmond and Tampa papers.
This just means that there are more unemployed copy editors out there, and the product will get a little worse. Sigh.
I found this blog entry below on the subject:
A tribute to N&O copy editors and page designers
