Changing times

DEATH OF A NEWSPAPER: My last newspaper, the Surry Messenger, apparently ceased publication this week because of lack of advertising. That's not a real surprise. At least three of us were let go last year, and the paper went from five to three days a week; my last day was Jan. 2, 2009.

The odd thing is that they've put nothing about the move on their web site. And, almost ironically, the editorial for their last issue, Sunday's, was about rough economic times in the county. It ended on a positive note, with the likely rebound of local businesses.

FREELANCE FAILURES: Here's a sad newspaper story -- Freelance writing's unfortunate new model -- found on the LA Times' web site. It's 10 times harder to be a freelancer than it was 10 years ago.
