Is that right?

I just found this sentence online in an Australian magazine of learning.

But he mermerised the room – partly, no doubt, due to his exalted place in history – but also because he could actually spin a tale, and carry you with him. 

I wonder if the writer meant "mesmerized" (or mesmerised in Australian parlance) instead of "mermerised."
