Busch didn't win the first Nationwide race since 2006. They've had plenty of races since then.
Busch earns his first Nationwide victory since 2006
People usually don't see the distinction, but it's there.

Maybe my brain isn't working today. I'm sure there's a simple explanation that I'm not seeing -- why is it wrong to say he won a race? Which part is incorrect?

Jan, the headline says Kurt Busch wins first Nationwide race since 2006. It wasn't the first Nationwide race since 2006, and it wasn't HIS first Nationwide race since 2006.
