Comments on editing a quote

Here are two comments I received on a recent post about editing quotes.

It's fine. On some level, you are editing quotes by selecting which ones to use from your notebook or tape.

I'd shorten the quote the same way you did. That's not changing the quote. After all, you're not quoting everything the person said.
