Not the penultimate game

NEEDS EDITING: Since the 2000 season there have been nine Super Bowls played, which means 18 teams advanced to the penultimate game.

Let's look up the word penultimate:

penultimate [pɪˈnʌltɪmɪt]

next to the last

anything that is next to the last, esp a penult
[from Latin paene almost + ultimate, on the model of Latin paenultimus]

The Super Bowl isn't the next-to-last game of the year. It's not penultimate; it's ultimate. So penultimate doesn't work here.
