Knew knickers?

This sentence from the Washington Post bothered me when I first read it:

To be fair, McEnroe’s short white shorts aren’t far off from the look of his knew knickers.

Knew knickers? I assumed the writer meant new knickers. Unless it's a play on the "k" in knickers.

The story is about John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg starting their own underwear line.
