To edit or not to edit a quote

I normally wouldn't edit a direct quote in a newspaper story, but this sentence tempts me.

"It’s his first day out there and it’s his first day out there and I don’t have to correct him on anything."

Even when a person says something twice, I'd probably edit part of it out.

"It’s his first day out there, and I don’t have to correct him on anything."

I don't think that hurts anything at all.
