To edit or not to edit a quote

I normally wouldn't edit a direct quote in a newspaper story, but this sentence tempts me.

"It’s his first day out there and it’s his first day out there and I don’t have to correct him on anything."

Even when a person says something twice, I'd probably edit part of it out.

"It’s his first day out there, and I don’t have to correct him on anything."

I don't think that hurts anything at all.

What do you think?

  1. It's fine. On some level, you are editing quotes by selecting which ones to use from your notebook or tape.

  2. I'd shorten the quote the same way you did. That's not changing the quote. After all, you're not quoting everything the person said.

    I'm enjoying your blog.
