Turned the reigns...

Yes, that would be reins, like the reins of a horse (or the reins of a football franchise).


ALSO FOUND ONLINE: Before ever playing a down of professional football, Dion Jordan was already drawing comparisons to Dolphins' great, Jason Taylor.


You don't need an apostrophe on Dolphins or a comma after great, and you don't need already.
